The Phoenix Theatre is home to The Phoenix Theatre Company and together aim to develop and present high-quality, contemporary theatrical services that enrich the culture and lifestyle of the local community. We are a not-for-profit Association and Company and strive to support creative, relevant and exciting theatre within a professional standard of excellence for the Illawarra and South Coast, positioning ourselves to support the connections between community-based performance groups and professional companies.

We endeavour to do this by:

•  Presenting works that reflect the diversity of the Illawarra region

• Presenting works that innovate and/or challenge the norm for the Illawarra region, including content and styles

• Supporting script development and workshopping

• Collaborating with creatives to develop their skills and provide opportunities to transfer theoretical knowledges into practical applications

• Facilitating the space to perform emerging works

• Forming partnerships and collaborations with practitioners and creatives across all levels of the arts sector, including students, volunteers and professionals

• Seeking opportunities to extend works to additional venues and audiences, furthering the reputation of the Illawarra performing arts as high-quality

• Collaborating with individuals, organisations and companies associated with the performing arts (both within and outside of the Illawarra) to further develop new works, share resources and knowledge, and promote regional theatre

The Phoenix Theatre Company seeks to ensure all works meet the criteria of:

• Creative/Innovative: We apply imagination, innovation and expertise to all productions, seeking the best methods of working including new style/experiences and challenging audience expectations

• Relevant: We ensure that our works provide perspectives on the stories, concerns, skills and development of Illawarra communities with a focus on marginalised communities and multiculturalism, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures/perspectives and LGBTQIA+ stories

• Excellent: We pursue the highest standards in all works, considering what is achievable in the space and focusing on maximising all areas of the development and staging processes

• Exciting: Our work should engage, inspire and delight
